{"id":647,"date":"2018-04-07T02:19:34","date_gmt":"2018-04-07T02:19:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/digital-publications-indexing.org\/?p=647"},"modified":"2018-04-19T21:03:20","modified_gmt":"2018-04-19T21:03:20","slug":"joint-meeting-with-bookbuilders-of-boston","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/digital-publications-indexing.org\/index.php\/2018\/04\/07\/joint-meeting-with-bookbuilders-of-boston\/","title":{"rendered":"Joint Meeting Held with Bookbuilders of Boston"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Digital Publications Indexing SIG co-organized a meeting along with the <a href=\"http:\/\/newenglandindexers.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New England Chapter of ASI<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbboston.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bookbuilders of Boston<\/a>, held Thursday evening, April 5, 2018, at the offices of the textbook publisher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cengage.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cengage Learning<\/a>, which is also an organizational member of ASI.<\/p>\n<p>The program theme, \u201cIndexes in Ebooks and Embedded Indexing,\u201d brought together three speakers and an opportunity for discussion. As most of the 22 attendees were members of Bookbuilders of Boston, it was an opportunity to raise the awareness of embedded and hyperlinked ebook indexing among publishers, so that they don\u2019t simply discard the index in ebook editions.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_651\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-651\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-651 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/digital-publications-indexing.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Steve_Ingle-300x183.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/digital-publications-indexing.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Steve_Ingle-300x183.jpg 300w, https:\/\/digital-publications-indexing.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Steve_Ingle-768x468.jpg 768w, https:\/\/digital-publications-indexing.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Steve_Ingle-1024x624.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-651\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Steve Ingle presenting &#8220;The Battle of the Books&#8221;<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The evening\u2019s featured speaker, Stephen Ingle, President and CEO of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wordco.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WordCo Indexing Services<\/a> and a past manager of the Digital Publications Indexing SIG, addressed the issues that publishers face with digital publications in his presentation \u201cIndexes for Digital Publications: \u2018The Battle of the Books\u2019.\u201d The issues to be \u201cbattled\u201d and resolved include: whether or not to even have an index in a digital book\/ebook, whether a hyperlinked index should be page-hyperlinked (usually based on what was the print page) or precision-hyperlinked (to an element, such as a paragraph), and whether indexes should be fully functional. Fully functional may include allowing user input, taking advantage of the digital potential, and giving the user an improved experience over print.<\/p>\n<p>Marty Rabinowitz, Executive Director of Content Services at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cengage.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cengage<\/a>, presented briefly on how Cengage currently handles the indexing process for print products and what is done with ebooks and courseware. Marty raised issues and questions: Do customers find value in indexes? Is it worth the investment?
